Engine compartment

Here you will find information on any exam questions relating to the engine compartment. These include, among other things, windshield wiper fluid, coolant, engine oil (dipstick), brake fluid, battery and fuses.

Open / close hood

To open the hood, pull the lever in the footwell of the driver's seat twice.

Why pull twice? If the lever is accidentally activated, a safety lock prevents the hood from opening and hitting the windshield backwards while driving.

To close the hood, you can drop it from a height of about 40 cm. Please check whether it is really closed. Make sure to avoid unnecessary noise.

Lock the hood

Lift the black rod with the yellow handle and insert it into the opening.

Please do not smoke while carrying out checks in the engine compartment. There is a risk of explosion.

Refill windshield wiper fluid

You can buy windshield wiper fluid ready-to-use at a hardware store or gas station. They are available in summer and winter mixes. You can fill the summer mixture into the vehicle in spring, even if it still has leftover winter mixture in it and vice versa.

Why no water? Water contains lime. This can damage the wiring in the vehicle and it can also freeze in cold temperatures.

Visual inspection of coolant

The coolant cools the engine and is therefore very important, otherwise the engine can overheat. The coolant container is under high pressure and gets very hot! Therefore, please do not open it if the engine has not yet cooled down. (There is a risk of burns) Please check the coolant level visually on the scale on the outside of the container. The coolant level must be between the two markings max. and min. If necessary, you can top up the appropriate coolant yourself (let it cool down first!) or contact your car repair shop. What I would recommend.

If the instrument cluster shows you that something is wrong with the coolant, or if the marking on the scale at the very left edge turns red, then please carry out a visual check. If you have problems with the coolant, stop immediately and switch off the engine.

Check oil level

Oil lubricates the engine. You should therefore check the oil level regularly. Place your car on a flat surface and wait a few minutes until it is no longer hot. (Oil expands when heated and would falsify the reading.) Pull out the oil dipstick using the yellow handle, wipe the end with household paper or something similar and put it completely back in. Now pull it out again and check whether the oil level is between the two markings (note the notches) on the end of the oil dipstick.

If the warning light in the instrument cluster lights up while driving, stop immediately and switch off the engine. Let cool down. Check engine oil level. If necessary, notify the breakdown service.

Refill oil

You can refill oil yourself if the oil level is low. Please note the information in the operating instructions. (For some vehicles, this must be done by the auto repair shop.) Check the sticker on the hood or the owner's manual to determine which oil to use. Open the screw cap and add a little oil. Wait a moment and check the current level with the dipstick. If necessary, continue to add oil until the oil level is between the two notches on the dipstick. Please do not add too much oil as oil expands when heated.

Brake fluid

Brake fluid is an important part of ensuring that your brakes always work as they should. Therefore, please check the brake fluid level visually here too. It must be between the max. and min. markings. If the level is too low, you can top up the brake fluid yourself. However, I would recommend that you have this done by the workshop.

Battery

The battery is located on the right side in the engine compartment. The positive terminal (+) of the battery is located under the red cover. The positive (+) terminal is covered to prevent the positive and negative terminals from accidentally touching together.

Fuses

The fuses are located in the engine compartment on the right side. You can find out which fuse has which function in the operating instructions (in the glove compartment in the transparent folder).

Tow away

The towing eye is located in the trunk under the cover. You have to remove the cover in the bumper and screw the towing eye into the thread.

Before you tow another vehicle or have your own towed, please find out whether and how your car can be towed. It doesn't work the same for everyone. A look at the operating instructions will help.

A vehicle with a defective engine must not be towed with a rope as the steering and braking support no longer works.

Bridge over

Use the red cable for the positive poles and the black cable for the negative poles. Please only connect positive to positive pole and negative to negative pole. Otherwise there may be a short circuit.

Please connect the cables in the following order:

(red cable) positive pole giving vehicle, positive pole receiving vehicle, (black cable) negative pole giving vehicle, negative pole receiving vehicle. Start giving vehicle, start receiving vehicle. Let both vehicles run for at least 5 minutes. You can then remove the cables in the reverse order.
